1Q84: Books 1, 2 And 3 is a fictional novel set in Tokyo in 1984. It is divided into three volumes, and each volume narrates the story from the perspective of each of the three protagonists. The title of the novel is a reference to Nineteen Eighty-Four, a 1949 novel by George Orwell. It is also a form of Japanese wordplay. The first volume is centred around the protagonist Masami Aomame, who carries out assignments for a certain secret organization. One day, while on one such secret mission, she gets trapped in a traffic jam. The driver of the cab ferrying Aomame to her destination suggests that she could use an emergency escape to reach her meeting. In her desperation to complete her assignment on time, she complies with his suggestion, despite his warning that it could alter her reality completely - a warning that becomes true. The second novel features the protagonist Tengo - an aspiring novelist leading a mundane life. He is called upon to rewrite the manuscript of a promising young writer Fuka-Eri, so that it can be entered into a literary contest. Tengo’s uneasiness with the whole project and his subsequent interaction with Fuka-Eri brings unexpected drama into his otherwise nondescript existence. The third volume is narrated from the perspective of Ushikawa, a private investigator on the trail of Tengo and Aomame for their suspected involvement in a certain case. Meanwhile, Tengo and Aomame have slipped deeper into strange realities that they are unable to decipher. Their lives seem to be running in parallel, often colliding, either by divine intervention or through their own choices. They may or may not succeed in making sense of their strange new worlds, but their destinies seemed to have irrevocably converged. The first two volumes of 1Q84: Books 1, 2 And 3 were published in May 2009, while the third one was published in April 2010. The novel received mainly positive reviews. It was in the running for the Man Asian Literary Prize for Fiction (2011).
