He attended Hofstra University for three years and then joined the Army and went to Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He served in Vietnam as an infantry platoon leader with the First Calvary Division. He eventually returned to Hofstra Universtiy and received a degree in Political Science and History. He also holds three honorary doctorates which are: Doctor of Humane Letters from Hofstra University, Doctor of Literature from Long Island University, and Doctor of Humane Letters from Dowling College. His first writings were NYPD detective novels. His first major novel was By the Rivers of Babylon which was published in 1978. He is a member of the Authors Guild, the Mystery Writers of America and American Mensa. DeMille has two children and his daughter Lauren has collaborated with him on a short story titled Revenge and Rebellion.
