Eye Of The Needle tells the story of Henry Faber, a German spy, nicknamed die Nadel or The Needle for using a stiletto as his weapon of choice. When he is interrupted by his landlady while radioing important information to Berlin, he kills her in his trademark fashion before resuming the transmission. To catch him, the MI5 recruit a history professor, Godliman, and a widowed ex-policeman, Bloggs. They connect the interrupted broadcast and murdered landlady to Faber and soon start following him across Europe. Although very nearly caught by soldiers, Faber manages to escape by killing them all with his stiletto. His trademark method of murder makes him easy to follow and soon, Godliman and Bloggs are hot on his trail, eventually following him to Aberdeen, Scotland. An exhausted Faber is desperately trying to reach Berlin, when he is shipwrecked and stranded on Storm Island where he meets David, a trainee RAF pilot who has lost the use of his legs in an accident, and Lucy, his wife. Eye Of The Needle was first published in the year 1978 and was Follet’s first bestseller. The book as been well received, earning Follet the Edgar Award for Best Novel for the year 1979 from the Mystery Writers of America. The book was adapted for a motion picture in 1981 from a screenplay by Stanley Mann and was directed by Richard Marquand. It featured Donald Sutherland as Henry Faber and Kate Nelligan as Lucy.
