Summary Of The book The story of Madame Bovary revolves around a doctors wife who is bored and yearns for a more romantic and exciting life. The novel serves as a social commentary on various societal structures like education, marriage, wealth and kinship. It follows a realist mode of writing and thus, is as accurate a rendition of common life as can be. Emma Bovary, Charles Bovarys second wife, has childlike romantic fantasies which according to her are often foiled by the practicalities of everyday life. Her wishes and aspirations are so high and unrealistic, that they often seem ludicrous in the light of reality. A mundane life and a far from fairy tale marriage drive her to look for the fulfilment of her dreams outside of her marriage. She indulges in adulterous affairs and lives a life which is beyond her means in order to escape her banal situation. Such an outrageous depiction of reality drew widespread criticism and charges of obscenity at first, but after Flauberts acquittal in court, the novel became a bestseller. The novel is today considered a masterpiece and is a pivotal work of literature which paved the way for a new form of writing known as literary realism. Flauberts faithfulness to the ordinary elements of country life is set in contrast to his protagonists impractical yearnings, earning the novel a realist tag. There have been numerous film adaptations of the novel, the most notable of which would be the 1949 film produced by MGM. It has also been the focus of several television series and musical dramas too.
