Eat, Pray, Love starts with the author in her thirties. She is living a life she always wanted to, or so she thought. A husband, a beautiful house, financial stability, friends, she has it all. As decided earlier, she and her husband are trying to have a baby. Things were going as per the plan. Everything seemed just right. And yet, she is miserable, completely disillusioned and unhappy. Her marriage ends in a divorce. She has an affair, and that ends horribly too. This is when she decides to look for the missing things in her life, those missing things which have been making her feel incomplete and unhappy. Thus, begins her year long journey across different countries in the world, in search of what she really desires from life. The book is composed of 108 chapters. In the first leg of her journey, she explores Italy. She enjoys the pleasure of food and the beautiful country. She also learns the art of pleasure. India is where she connects with God, and comes across the art of devotion. In Bali, Indonesia, she finds a balance between pleasure and devotion. Here, she meets a toothless man, whose revelations help her make peace with her past. She finally feels ready to find and accept love once again. It is in Bali that she rediscovers love, and finds the man she would later get married to. She stays in each country for 4 months. Gilbert traces her journey from disillusionment to happiness and peace in this memoir. Eat, Pray, Love became a bestseller, and was on the New York Times Bestseller list for a long time.
