Wow wow wow... The lush illustrations alone would be reason to buy this book, but the story of a mysterious wolfhound and his boy is compelling and delightfully written. Hundreds of illustrations make this book a work of art... the audience for this book should be just about all dog lovers, especially those who can laugh at a dog farting (which Gelert often does) while under stressful circumstances... One of the most amazing books with a canine for a hero that Ive read this year.... I cant wait for the next volume to come out! Lets all say a prayer that the illustrators hands and eyes hold out... the drawings are delightfully detailed and meticulous.

Fantastic illustrations. :) The story doesnt even need them as it is so complete and vivid an adventure through the storytelling alone .. But its a bonus to enjoy the artists original vision and talent - i hope one day soon it gets reviewed in mainstream press in UK & finds a big publisher and printed to the kind of quality that does it more justice (this print-on-demand book is not bad quality and only has a couple of auto-correct-style copy-editing misses here and there). But its in the world, which is a very good thing. My proper review is alongside the original unillustrated edition :)

Well, now. Where to begin. Ill try and write slowly, because otherwise, my enjoyment of this book comes tumbling out incoherently. Talk about a rattlin good yarn! This story hits the ground running and never slows down. Its rip-roaring, swashbuckling, high-energy adventure. It reminded me of all my favorite Indiana Jones movies all rolled into one, but with a Wolfhound and his boy in the hero/sidekick relationship. David Bells jumping off point is the ancient Celtic story of the legendary Wolfhound, Gelert. It begins in Wales...but thats certainly not where it ends! By the time were done with Book 1 (theres another book in the works, Hooray!), our heroes have been abducted by Chinese Warriors, attacked by Barbary Pirates (and apes), sailed to the Holy Land, got involved in the Crusades, been attacked by lions, pursued by the Chinese Emperors full fleet, fought off all manner of attacks, survived typhoons, sandstorms, and just about anything else you can think of. Not since the days of Rafael Sabatini (The Seahawk, Captain Blood), has historical adventure come at such a tearing pace. And there are dogs! Lots of dogs! Gelert, the noble Wolfhound is the center of the book, but there are strange and wonderful critters in The Dog Hunters. Its really a breathless,
